Home Depot Foundation Begins Build for US Army Veteran

Atlanta, GA (September 1, 2016) – NW Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity, in partnership with The Home Depot Foundation, began building a home on August 13, 2016 for Matthew, a U.S. Army veteran with disabilities and single father with three children.

Matthew served in the Persian Gulf War and was honorably discharged after suffering an injury in 1993. No longer able to work, Matthew reached out to the VA for housing assistance through a supportive housing program for homeless veterans. Through this program, he was introduced to Habitat for Humanity and given the opportunity to own a home.

“The opportunity to become a homeowner is a blessing to me and my family. It’s what we’ve been praying for,” Matthew said.

NW Atlanta Habitat for Humanity has built more than 460 affordable homes in Cobb, Douglas and Paulding counties since 1986. Matthew’s home will be a part of the affiliate’s 30th anniversary and will be dedicated to the family on Nov. 11, 2016, which is nationally recognized as Veterans Day.

“Giving back to veterans is personal to us at The Home Depot, and last year we committed to investing $5 million dollars by 2018 to serve senior and aging veterans in the metro Atlanta area,” said Catherine Stodola, Atlanta Giving – The Home Depot Foundation. “We are excited to partner with NW Metro Atlanta Habitat and build a home for Matthew and his family to live comfortably right here in Cobb County.”

The Home Depot Foundation, which focuses its giving on improving the homes and lives of U.S. military veterans and their families, provided a grant to help NW Metro Atlanta Habitat build and make critical home repairs for aging veterans. More than 100 local associates of the company will also volunteer their time and talents to help construct Matthew’s home.

“With his service to our country, it is important that we find a way to take care of Matthew and his family,” says David McGinnis, CEO of NW Metro Atlanta Habitat. “Partnering with a great sponsor like The Home Depot Foundation, we are excited to be able to build a home for Matthew and his children and help the foundation continue its work with veterans across the country.”
