2018 Chrys Street Scholarship

NW Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity is pleased to announce the establishment of the Chrys Street Scholarship.  Chrys Street was inspired by Habitat for Humanity founder, Millard Fuller.  He encouraged building simple, decent houses for low-income families in their community using volunteer labor and donations, and requiring repayment only of the cost of the materials used.  She called a meeting in the St. James Episcopal Church in Marietta to discuss founding a local Habitat affiliate, Cobb County Habitat for Humanity (now known as NW Metro Atlanta Habitat).  Chrys Street was  eager to include young people in this mission.  She reached out to South Cobb and Marietta High Schools. The schools’ vocational tech students framed the first two houses built by the affiliate on the school campuses.  The frames were transported by truck to the building sites. Chrys Street also served as board member and president.

To be eligible for the Chrys Street Scholarship, an applicant must attend high school in Cobb, Douglas or Paulding County, and be an active member of that school’s Habitat organization. The recipient will embody Ms. Street’s “get it done” attitude and will have exhibited actions in keeping with the mission of NW Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. The application contains additional criteria.

In 2018, each recipient will receive $400. The scholarship comes from earmarked donations and from a portion of ReStore profits paid to the affiliate. The scholarship fund receives NO general homebuilding donations.

The Scholarship Award Committee will choose award recipients. The Scholarship Award Committee will consist of 5 members; selected from the Board of Directors.

The affiliate will endeavor to present the scholarship award at the school’s Awards Assembly or similar gathering, in cooperation with school staff.
