Our Volunteer, Laura

Interviewer: Please tell us a little about you and your family.
Laura: Hi, I am Laura. I am a volunteeraholic. I have been trying to find a support group but have had no luck! I am a divorced mother of two wonderful young adults. My daughter is a cardiovascular ICU nurse (she is a Habitat volunteer as well) and my son is a Navy Corpsman.

Interviewer: How did you hear about NW Metro Atlanta Habitat?
Laura: Through my church. I started as a general volunteer and eventually became the H4H Ministry Head at my church.

Interviewer: Why did you decide to become a Habitat volunteer?
Laura: Over the years, I have experienced a variety of volunteer opportunities and wanted to try something different.

Interviewer: How long have you volunteered with NW Metro Atlanta Habitat?
Laura: My first build was in 2008. I became hooked and am looking forward to my 10th build in April.

Interviewer: What volunteer jobs opportunities have you participated in with Habitat? What was your favorite?
Laura: I have participated in signing in volunteers, framing, installing hurricane straps, insulation, installing soffit, Tyvek wrap, installing windows, installing door handles and locks, Exterior and Interior painting, landscaping & Safety Monitor. My favorite was painting!

Interviewer: How would you describe your Habitat experience?
Laura: Phenomenal. It is so moving to see the build start as a concrete slab and morph into a house through the hands of the many volunteers from all walks of life and under the guidance of the incredibly patient crew leaders and into a home at the Dedication.

Interviewer: How has this experience changed you?
I have acquired some fabulous friends whom I love dearly and have met many interesting individuals. Also, seeing my daughter interact with the many extraordinary and strong male role models has been life changing.

Interviewer: What would you want other potential volunteers to know about NW Metro Atlanta Habitat?
Laura: If you are looking for a unique volunteer experience, an opportunity to learn new skills, meet a wide variety of amazing individuals and provide affordable housing for people in need, this is the organization!
