Habitat for Humanity starts building season in Mableton, hopes to build 16 this year

habitat-valentine-build1NW Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity kicked off its 2015 building season last month on Valentine’s Day, by starting a new home in Mableton for a mother and her 6-year-old daughter.

“It was a cold day, but everyone came out to accomplish one thing: to give a deserving family a home,” said Kim Watson, a volunteer and close friend of the homeowner.

“You see a lot of teamwork and smiles because we all know that we have to help each other in the community.”

More than 30 volunteers joined the new Habitat family on Feb. 14 to raise and sheet the exterior walls of the new home. Their work will continue to finish in time for the dedication ceremony on April 25.

‟In 2015, our Habitat affiliate is planning an ambitious building campaign in Cobb County and throughout our entire service area,” David McGinnis, CEO of NW Metro Atlanta Habitat, said. “We hope to build 16 new affordable Habitat homes this year and, with just seven committed sponsors, we are calling on the business, civic and religious communities to help us reach our goal.”

It is an aggressive plan compared to recent years and for good reason — Habitat has a waiting list of more than 400 deserving families that need more affordable housing.

“We bring volunteers and sponsors together to help hardworking people, many of them veterans, build equity and wealth and provide a secure environment for their families through homeownership,” McGinnis said.

Juergen Grimm, president of Heidelberg North America, participated in the team-building last week and explained the company’s sponsorship and emphasis on giving back. “When the company moved to Kennesaw, the city welcomed us with open arms. So, it is important for us to give back to the community that has been a home to us. This is our sixth build with Habitat and every time, it’s a rewarding experience to be able to give back to deserving families.”

Munich American Reassurance Company, Wells Fargo, First United Methodist Church of Marietta, Heidelberg USA and Georgia Anesthesiologists, P.C. of Kennestone Hospital are all sponsors of the new home being built.
